2024 has been a wild ride! It kicked off with epic waves on the Gold Coast, Australia, for the first WSL Challenger Series of the year, before heading back home to Cape Town's winter swells. I scored some incredible waves in Cape Town, Transkei, and Durban.
Mid-year, I hit a bump in the road with a high-grade MCL tear that benched me for three months. But the comeback was great, by the end of September, I was back in the water just in time for the last swell of the season at JBay, where I got my longest wave of the year and drew some of the best lines I've ever drawn out there! Which is showcased in the films mentioned below.
Since then, I've been surfing non-stop and feeling stronger than ever scoring amazing waves around Cape Town's rugged coastlines.
Dawn Patrol really made a difference for my surfing, when i could compare speeds at the different waves as well as my total wave time which helps me understand how much surfing i'm really doing during a session and that pushes me each and every surf. I really like that the app shows at what part of the tide I caught my waves letting me look back on sessions which helps decide when I'm going to surf that specific spot next time. The feature that showcases the time between waves is also epic to make sure I'm not sitting for longer than 5 minutes at a time! Keeping a surf journal with wave forecasts, photos, and all those little details makes it way easier to plan for future sessions.
My goal was to do more surf trips around South Africa and fully embrace the adventure of surf travel. From the clean walls of JBay to Cape Town's throaty barrels, I think it's been a great year of surfing which has been showcased in films like 'Kelp Town' and 'Riding The Sardine Run' both presented by FCS.
Looking back on this year, yes I definitely had a few moments that standout for me!
But the session I had at an undisclosed slab kilometres out at sea with Twiggy Baker, Matt Bromely and Frank Soloman was really special! There were mind bending waves that day, with just us out there trading off on some heavy backside tubes! I had a wave out there where I let go of my rail and just stood there in this green cavern, in that moment I could really feel the energy of that wave, doing that blow back thing and felt like it was sucking me backwards. I held on, still no grab and a few seconds later I got spat out but spat out so hard it almost launched me, as I re-emerged from the spit and pulled off into the channel where the boat & skis were, I just heard everyone screaming and hooting. That was quite a special moment to share with some incredible people, pure stoke all round!
At the end of this session is when I got injured, I took off late, made the drop, pulled up on the rail but the lip of a 8-10ft wave came crashing down on me, compressing me into my board at a bad angle which then resulted in the MCL Tear. Hero to zero so fast haha! Shit happens.
I learned the power of patience and trusting that everything happens at the right time, especially when paired with hard work and persistence.
I have really been enjoying my surfing this year, drawing the lines I envisioned on the clean walls of Jbay to getting crazy tubes in the middle of nowhere. Somewhere amongst it all, I have found myself really appreciating the journey and enjoying the adventure that surfing has given me! I am really excited for the year ahead on the WSL Tour and surf trips to some of the best waves in the world!
Haha yeah, i actually get a lot of waves in a session which i didn't realise as i always lost count before using the app...
I would say the total wave time feature as it helped me push harder and spend more time on a wave as those numbers are surprisingly low compared to how much time you spend in the water, i think a lot of surfers could benefit from this too.
Comparing session stats with my friends has been so much fun, it's like adding a new layer of friendly competition to our surfs.
Go for it! It opens up a whole new way of looking at your surfing, and trust me, you'll end up even more amped to get out there.
I'm looking forward to competing on the WSL Challenger Series and going on even more surf trips to world-class waves. I'm also excited to see how many waves I can rack up with Dawn Patrol in 2025, it's going to be fun keeping track!
Now it’s your turn. Open the app to see your own year-in-review stats.Whether you’re celebrating your longest ride, your favourite breaks, or the friends you’ve surfed with, there’s no better way to reflect on an epic year of surfing.
